We found out yesterday that our company is to be sold or closed down. The latter is more likely and thus I shall probably soon be made redundant. Therefore, if anyone knows of any jobs (or any freelance work) going, please do let me know. Any kind of copy editing/typesetting/proofreading would be fine. Thanks. |

| Ugh...that's a horrible feeling. I got laid off three times by the age of 25. Best of luck to you, I'm sure you'll land on your feet...and maybe the worst won't even happen! |

Dear God don't tell me you're employed by CMPi Sal.
She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed works for them and has just been given notice of impending redundancy which will probably come in to effect on 2nd January after the 'consultation' process. She works in Production and there's a whole bunch of publications going down .
I can only wish you the very best of luck but if there's any jobs going She-Who- will have yer legs off to get at it first |

| Thanks Rovark, but not CMPi. We've had our overlords in today banging on about the consultation process too. Thanks Downtown too; I expect it will be fine, but I'm just concerned about bad luck and thus being the second best person at a string of interviews. |

| I'm sorry to hear that Salopian. That's tough. Good luck, and no matter what happens, try not to take things too personally. |

| Thanks you two. Honestly, I'm not getting the violins out or anything. My dad recently had a heart bypass, and his coming through that well puts this sort of thing into perspective. |

Oh, Sal, that's awful! My late dad had a bypass and it certainly is a vivid reality check. The op usually produces excellent results, though. But coming at the same time as your job loss - it's just so damn debilitating. You have my deep sympathy. I hope something will turn up for you soon.

Still, getting made redundant just before Christmas is a good time - think of the money you'll save on presents you won't have to buy now! You could even make a profit out of it.
OK, there is no bright side... |

I bought an outdoor table a month ago from a guy who had had a triple-bypass 15 years ago. So no worries.
It sounds like eveyone's more worried about his redundancy than Salopian is!

Good luck with a new job anyway. |

All the best with the job situation Sal. We can all vouch your proofreading skills. Glad to hear that your dad has come through his bypass ok. |

They told us a week after the November payday, though. The December one will be too close to Christmas to buy presents then. Luckily, I had not yet bought any, but I pretended that I had splashed out a lot in order to rile them. (They made a point of saying that it was better to tell us now, rather than after Christmas, which you're still right that it was.) Tee hee. |

The main thing was that he came through it fine, but at the time there were many stresses. He was to have it on a Thursday, so I took that week off work as I ahd to be at home the previous weekend for another reason. He went in on the Wednesday, delayed by several hours because of beds. He had his pre-op at 6:00 a.m. and then we had the day to sit there till he was to have it in the afternoon. At about 4:00 p.m., they cancelled it, because the morning one had overrun. He had to just go home. It got moved to a week on the following Monday, so I had to come back to London and then have another two days off to go back up, using up virtually all of my remaining holiday, plus another fifty quid. My dad is self-employed so this meant another week and a half with no income. On top of that, a very good friend of my parents died of a heart attack the Sunday before he was originally to have it, and his funeral was on the Friday before the second run. So my parents had to come down to London for that, and I had to use another half day holiday (though of course I was happy to) for that, even though I still worked seven hours that day!
Anyway, needless to say, all of this (apart from the friend's death) is fine in comparison to what could have happened, but at the time the stress levels were horrific. (If you look back in the Fourum, there were loads of posts from me in the middle of the night!) |

I am very sorry to hear this. I truly wish I could be of assistance, but unfortunately...
I hope everything works out, and a speedy and complete recovery to your dad. |

Sal, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
Could you go freelance as a proofreader?
I know a few people who do it over here. |

| Don't worry, honestly. I'm not fretting about it; I just wanted to put the feelers out straight away. Yes, I do some freelance work at the moment. One has to make a lot of contacts to do it full time, but that would be my ultimate aim, so that I could go and live in the South Pacific or something. I won't attempt to do it now, though, as I don't have savings as a fallback. I'm tempted to do a TEFL course if I can afford it - I taught English in Nepal but without a qualification. I wouldn't want to teach permanently, but it might be good from time to time, especially with regard to freelancing in the future. I expect that it will all fall into place one way or another. |
