Everybody says this is a faithful adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel, so I guess I don't have to read it now. Robert Pattinson, that hunky teen vampire, plays a Master of the Universe who pokes through snarled Manhattan traffic in an impossibly long limo [made so by David Cronenberg's bravura staging] to get a haircut. Various people come in and spout almost mumbled, almost non sequiturs at him while he (a) physically screws some of them, (b) undergoes an invasive medical exam, and (c) chugs vodka. There's a strange underscore that makes it all even eerier. When you can see out the limo windows, it appears to be moving at slow camera dolly speed, not like an automobile at all. A reverse process shot! You catch a fleeting glimpse of a guy who looks like a well-known actor, and an hour later, you are made to understand that it was that actor!
Pattinson gets out too, for some hotel action, a couple meals at a diner counter, and that magic haircut. But every single character seems to be blandly reciting random profundities on quaaludes. It had sort of an hypnotic effect, then I fell asleep for about :15, then I picked right up again. [I went back and watched, smartypants!] Great stuff from Kevin Durand, everybody's favorite heavy, and Paul Giamatti. This is probably not for most, but director Cronenberg knew exactly what he was going for, and he got it. Pattinson's trademark blank-slate persona really rocks here. The last shot before black is a m.f. |
