A piece of fluff from Cameron Crowe, but he's such a soulfully uplifting director that this by-the-numbers picture can actually work on you, provided you're in the right mood. Overgrieving widower Matt Damon, er, buys a rundown zoo. One of the mammals there [I'll say!] is Scarlett Johansson. Oh, I see you're way ahead of me. But there are wonderful touches, Crowe found a moppet scene-stealer, and you get animals too, to further load the emotional dice. I heard nothing but crap about this one, watched it with plenty of time after the crap, and was mildly, pleasantly surprised. If you get bored, you can watch the filmmaking, which is first-rate. The kid from ALMOST FAMOUS is here, with a monkey always on his shoulder. Why is a monkey always on his shoulder? B/c it looks cute, that's why. I'm only saying, better than the buzz. And the very last scene is even brilliant from writing, acting and tech points of view. |
