"I like to watch."

This little piddly thing actually turned out to be lots of fun!

I have assiduously resisted the stage show which was born in Hollywood, where all this is set, and finally coaxed its way to Broadway, where it is still packin em in. I was aware of the late-80s oeuvre but not a fan. However, these hair-metal songs can get under yer skin!

First off: Tom Cruise is game and gallumphing as a sorta Axl Rose. Then, you will not believe the wigs. Third off, though the songs are obviously lip-synched, we are made to believe that the actual actors are actually singing them! I gotta admit, I couldn't suss out an impostor!

Fourth off: it knows it's ridiculous. The ingenue is on a bus from Oklahoma to LA in 1987, and her last name is Christian. So she starts singing that great metal ballad to her sister...and before you know it, airbody on the bus is head-bangin to Night Ranger! [Oops, I shoulda said to the Night Ranger song. The two lovebirds are B'way-gypsy-quality voices, as are all the backups, which includes airbody on the bus, but we never hear the original 80s tracks, and thank god for that.]

Fifth off: if you love this short-lived aspect of pop music, then rent it by any means necessary. The joke is shared. The filmmakers understand. I might even have to git down and see this live show!
