I kept looking for the punchline. Couldn't believe it was for real.

As an avid NASA site visitor, I'm guessing that although the photo is real, there's a media rush to provide various interpretations. Here's an interesting page from JPL -- scroll down to see a similar image. Other NASA references are to craters and dune shapes exaggerated by camera angle. However, that's not saying it isn't a cave, and i've found some refs to similar sink holes on earth - usually filled with water, which would, of course, not be the case on Mars. Thanks, Sen, for posting the image - it's really fascinating.

Someday people will think we're so stoo-pid for having conversations like this!! Because they'll have been there!

There's actually been other recent evidence for liquid water (periodically) below the Martian surface (channels left by running water on the slopes of major craters etc), suggesting that there's quite a lot of ice close to the Martian surface that periodically or partially melts. There may even be some permanent water below the surface.

If you look carefully you can see sunlight on the right-hand side of the hole, but it's a very sharp edge as if cut by an apple-corer. So I'd guess that it's a sinkhole through ice, and is collapsing into the hole at the edges, and may be a relatively recent feature (in geological terms). Perhaps the ice disappears due to melting and flows to somewhere else below the surface, or perhaps the loss of material is a result of sublimation, i.e., the ice inside the hole slowly vapourises directly into the atmosphere causing the hole to widen and collapse around the edges.

No way is that an impact crater, the ground outside the rim is completely undisturbed.

Or perhaps the Martians who live in the centre of the planet have cut a hole through to the surface from which they'll launch their strike...

Man, I'd love to shine a torch down there and see what's going on.

I will warn you now: THIS GAME IS ADDICTIVE! The only saving grace is that there are only 60 levels. Do not say that you were not forwarned.

Rotten Tomatoes : 82%
Roger Ebert : 81%
Peter Travers : 80%
James Berardinelli : 78%

(Of course, if Gene Siskel was still alive, I'd probably have him listed higher than 82% - always agreed with him more than Ebert.)

It's not quite fair, since the RT site doesn't always assess with the same critics, however ....

* Rotten Tomatoes : 87%
* Peter Travers : 85%
* James Berardinelli : 81%
* Roger Ebert : 77%

It looks as if Baffy is more rotten than Lemmy but not quite as rotten as I am, which sounds about right.
