Hey,
Is it just me, or are penguins everywhere suddenly?
I see them everywhere and they've been in about four or five movies of late -- most recently, Happy Feet.
What is going on?
Sean, fess up.

I blame Mary Poppins. Once they starred in her movie they started to get the acting bug. It may have taken a few years. But here they are now. |

Once you become a penguinaholic you start to notice them everywhere. In NZ they are on packets of potato chips, on bags of ice in the freezer (funny that), on the back of blocks of cheese, on road signs warning of ice, on books in the bookstore (Penguin books of course ) etc etc.
Then of course there are the global penguins (Tux from Linux), Chilly Willy, Pingu etc that have been around for a long time.
But you're right about the penguins-in-movies. I'm not sure if that's copycat or coincidence; I suspect the latter as some of these movies must have been worked on at the same time, e.g., MOTP, Happy Feet, Madagascar etc.
I think people like penguins, and use them every excuse they get.

I second the motion, blow all those little black and white bastards to smithereens!
(This thread is FOR exploding the penguin population, right?) |

I don't know that I'm a penguinaholic. It's possible that knowing you like them has made me more aware of them. But, then, not sure that hypothesis holds up, since I know Cheese_Ed loves cheese and I haven't noticed more of that around lately.

I meant "Once one becomes a penguinaholic...", I was referring more to me. I became a penguinaholic a few years ago when travelling around the south of NZ with another penguinaholic (we visited places where penguins were likely to be), saw some Fiordland Crested Penguins from canoes in Fiordland, and watched some Yellow-Eyed Penguins march up a hill on the way home from a day's fishing on the south coast. After that trip I realised I really liked them. And since then I've noticed that penguins are everywhere. |

I'm an Ethan Hawke-aholic and I never see him anywhere.
I would like to see a penguin in person. That would be so cool. I tried to sell a spot to the company I do advertising for where the dog disguises himself as a penguin (a real Emperor penguin) and we would maybe have had to have a penguin on the shoot, which would have been neat, but the spot didn't go forward.
When I went to Australia for a shoot, I got to see and touch a koala. Very exciting. They are sooooo soft.

I was there before I was even on FWFR. Sorry. If I ever get back there . . .
Meanwhile, you're invited to visit Michigan and see me.

I just added that one to fwfr this morning, it's pending. But unfortunately I now realise my review is not as original as I thought. "Penguins hang six". I suppose it was an obvious one.
BTW, the 6 o'clock news at TVNZ usually has a penguin item at least once per month, but on tonight's news there were two penguin items! One was about the need to restore and maintain Shackleton's hut in Antarctica (it's getting too warm and the hut is being damaged by water from melting ice), and there were Adelie Penguins hanging around in front of the hut. The second item was about some injured Little Blue Penguins in NZ that have been in captivity, and five of them had callusses on their feet from hot stones in their pen. So someone designed some special penguin shoes to wear for a week to keep the ointment against the soles of their feet, and prevent further damage. The good news is they can still walk and swim wearing their shoes.
So, that's three new penguin items in 12 hours, without even looking. |
