This is such an odd time of the year. Yesterday was the birthday of Buddy Hall, a fellow Millvillite who died a few years back. Buddys birthday was 3 weeks and a day before mine, which was on the 26th. I remember this because there was a birthday party for him the night before my mom died. I came home, went to bed and a few scant hours later, I awoke, expecting to hear my mom snoring. My mom was a world class snorer. Except she wasnt snoring. I listened closely and didnt hear any movement from her bed. A few weeks before she died, my mom fell asleep smoking a cigarette and dropped it on the bed, setting the mattress to smolder. I was fairly attentive to her because of that and when I didnt hear anything from her, went to her bedside and realized she wasnt breathing. I tried shaking her but there was no response and slowly I realized she must be gone. I ran to my Aunt Georgannas room and called her and my Uncle Bus to wake up and we called the doctor, who was Dr. Hollenberg. They dont do things this way today, but Dr. Hollenberg came out and pronounced her dead. A bit later, my friend Susie Cash came out and was a great support. My heart was broken and I truly wanted to go with my mom.

What really makes this month so odd is that when my mom died, Kennetha was pregnant. She gave birth to Sunshine on August 24th, so it was like a little bonus gift to make my life more tolerable. She shared her with me. Sunshine has been gone since 1985, but like my mom - and apparently Buddy Hall - she doesnt leave my awareness in August. Everyone experiences loss in life. Thats only natural. But I gotta tell ya, for all its supposed goodness, August tends to stink as far as Im concerned. It certainly ain't for sissies. Miss ya, mom.

Lovely, BB. I think all of our life experiences seem to come together to make a bit of a whole. I know it has come together for me to become more than my parts. :)

The Death of Waves
for whl

Some waves lose their thunder to crash upon the shore
And some sigh in peace in the middle of the sea

But they all pool together with the salt and the sun
And we all pool together with the salt and the sun

Aw shucks. Thanks Mguy. You're so good to me and if I haven't told you that lately, I truly appreciate it. I saw the pic of your daughter and she is beautiful! So tall and lean and lovely. I hope my mom is smiling down on me, sometimes I think I feel it. Thanks!!!

But it is also the month in which God gave me and her mom my daughter, Tatiana; and if you want, I am more than happy to share that joy with you livie. And guess what: her dad is no sissy! Ergo, August is not for sissies.

August has made you stronger livie. I'm sure your mom is immensly proud of your strong and wildheart. I know I am.
