Posted - 12/01/2006 : 09:02:27 We found out yesterday that our company is to be sold or closed down. The latter is more likely and thus I shall probably soon be made redundant. Therefore, if anyone knows of any jobs (or any freelance work) going, please do let me know. Any kind of copy editing/typesetting/proofreading would be fine. Thanks. |

I admire your positive attitude, Salopian. As you said, your dad's surgery does put a few things into perspective.
I don't feel particularly positive, but I cannot get upset about it in comparison to other stuff. My dad continues to be healthy now, but other things going on vastly overshadow the job situation.

Nah, less if anything - as I won't have Internet access any more other than in cafes! |

Here if you're made redundant, the minimum you get is one month's pay for every year you've worked for the company. If its because of a takeover - meaning that the original company is getting lots to close down their shop - many people get 200% or even 300% (meaning two or three months for every year they've worked). There's also the vacation days you haven't taken (and some people can negotiate getting paid for extra of those as well) as well as unused sick days. If you had good insurance through your job, there's more.
Here the minimum is one week's pay per year worked. I'm getting two weeks per year, so it is good in a sense. I will also get paid for unused holiday, but as it has only accrued from the beginning of this month, it will only be one day. I never take any sick leave but it would be a rare company here that would pay bonuses for that. Most people wouldn't have any kind of insurance through their jobs. Do you mean health insurance? We don't need that, of course. Only a small proportion of better paid people would therefore get private health cover. |

I certainly hope you got a good redundancy package that will keep you going while you find something else.
Yep, if one month's pay is a good redundancy package!
That's it? After working for this company how many years? I can't believe it's so little. I recall when a friend of mine negotiated leaving his IT job and got enough to live on for almost a whole year. Of course, it could be that British Telecom was wanting to downsize and volunteers to leave got particularly sweet packages.

Of course, if your employer goes bankrupt, that's something else altogether - but except in the very worst cases, the one month for every year (or part worked thereof) is the very least you would get here.
You do have the right to go on the dole if you so wish (but I've never done that myself). |

Posted - 01/06/2008 : 09:37:18 Again, I wish I could help. I certainly hope you got a good redundancy package that will keep you going while you find something else. I'm sure this is just a minor glitch and you'll be back in the work force with avengence very soon.
All the best! |

Posted - 01/04/2008 : 18:50:53 Thanks. It's really fine - rationally a worry, but not an emotional blow. I only posted because I feel obliged to be proactive about looking for alternatives. |

Oh, Sal - how horrid! What a crap start to the year. I hope you find something even better soon.

Posted - 12/06/2006 : 11:14:10 Don't worry, honestly. I'm not fretting about it; I just wanted to put the feelers out straight away. Yes, I do some freelance work at the moment. One has to make a lot of contacts to do it full time, but that would be my ultimate aim, so that I could go and live in the South Pacific or something. I won't attempt to do it now, though, as I don't have savings as a fallback. I'm tempted to do a TEFL course if I can afford it - I taught English in Nepal but without a qualification. I wouldn't want to teach permanently, but it might be good from time to time, especially with regard to freelancing in the future. I expect that it will all fall into place one way or another. |

Could you go freelance as a proofreader?
I know a few people who do it over here. |
