We found out yesterday that our company is to be sold or closed down. The latter is more likely and thus I shall probably soon be made redundant. Therefore, if anyone knows of any jobs (or any freelance work) going, please do let me know. Any kind of copy editing/typesetting/proofreading would be fine. Thanks.  |

I don't feel particularly positive, but I cannot get upset about it in comparison to other stuff. My dad continues to be healthy now, but other things going on vastly overshadow the job situation.

Here the minimum is one week's pay per year worked. I'm getting two weeks per year, so it is good in a sense. I will also get paid for unused holiday, but as it has only accrued from the beginning of this month, it will only be one day. I never take any sick leave but it would be a rare company here that would pay bonuses for that. Most people wouldn't have any kind of insurance through their jobs. Do you mean health insurance? We don't need that, of course. Only a small proportion of better paid people would therefore get private health cover. |

That's it? After working for this company how many years? I can't believe it's so little. I recall when a friend of mine negotiated leaving his IT job and got enough to live on for almost a whole year. Of course, it could be that British Telecom was wanting to downsize and volunteers to leave got particularly sweet packages.

Of course, if your employer goes bankrupt, that's something else altogether - but except in the very worst cases, the one month for every year (or part worked thereof) is the very least you would get here.
You do have the right to go on the dole if you so wish (but I've never done that myself). |

Don't worry, honestly. I'm not fretting about it; I just wanted to put the feelers out straight away. Yes, I do some freelance work at the moment. One has to make a lot of contacts to do it full time, but that would be my ultimate aim, so that I could go and live in the South Pacific or something. I won't attempt to do it now, though, as I don't have savings as a fallback. I'm tempted to do a TEFL course if I can afford it - I taught English in Nepal but without a qualification. I wouldn't want to teach permanently, but it might be good from time to time, especially with regard to freelancing in the future. I expect that it will all fall into place one way or another. |
