Hey,

Is it just me, or are penguins everywhere suddenly?

I see them everywhere and they've been in about four or five movies of late -- most recently, Happy Feet.

What is going on?

Sean, fess up.

EM :)

Wow, this one is awesome! If he* swam in a straight line it's at least 3500km to where he ended up. My guess is he was born with the intrepid gene and will never go back to Antarctica. I'd love to have had this one tagged with a tracker before departure to see exactly where he's been (and will go).

And if he's lucky enough to meet an intrepid female penguin who had the same crazy idea to emigrate (which would probably happen every million years or so) and if conditions are suitable for breeding (lack of predators etc) then bingo... Emperors will then become the 7th penguin species in NZ.

*I'm assuming it's a 'he' when it could just as easily be a 'she' etc etc.

Edit: And here's the vid.

Since I use to be in the toy industry, I still dabble in new things coming out. Here is a new toy for you, Sean Emperor

Yep, good points.

Also, perhaps capturing a wild lion cub and transporting it by vehicle back to it's mother may have been a traumatic event for the cub and not beneficial to it. Likewise, would the mother be better off having found her own cub (from the perspective of learning) than having it delivered to her by humans in a vehicle? I suspect so.

It's a long time since I lived on a farm, but I think another consideration is that a lot of adult animals will reject their young if its smell betrays human intervention.

Here's a story about another intrepid Groucho...

Seriously, I don't go looking for these stories, they just jump off the front page of NZ's major news page.

Em, you're gonna regret starting a penguin thread.

You bet your life it does!

At first glance it seems unlikely, but then again they're sea birds, and some species spend years at sea during adolescence (e.g., Emperors) without setting foot on land. So the only issue would be finding food. I'd guess there wouldn't be much to eat in the Tasman Sea, hence he was hungry when he got there.

Are you sure he swam there? If that Groucho Marks penguin is anything like his namesake, he probably stowed away there!

I hope you've given him a soft-toy penguin to have as a real friend.

My cousin's 3-year old son is besotted with animals, he had been given most of the animals from Madagascar, but he didn't have any penguins. So I gave him a few penguins (of the hard rubber waterproof variety) a year ago, and since then he takes them everywhere he goes, particularly if he's going to be playing in water (i.e, a pool or the beach etc) as he knows penguins like water. But, a few months ago he watched March of the Penguins for the first time, and since then he likes to store his penguins in the freezer, as he now knows they like cold places. He thinks they're happy in there standing on a block of ice.

I must be very penguinated then.

BTW, welcome back, Tori.

He's a very nice little guy, always buckling his seatbelt and never forgetting his backpack. :) He also thinks that the word 'opinion' is penguin. :)
